A Cut Above: Reverse Appliqué

A Cut Above: Reverse Appliqué

Take a simple design to the next level with reverse appliqué, ruler work, and precise cutting techniques.

Date: Saturday, August 22 Time: 10:30 AM–2:00 PM Cost: $35 + supplies & equipment

Discover the creative possibilities of reverse appliqué as you transform layers of contrasting fabric into a bold and dimensional design. In this hands-on class, you will combine quilting, precise cutting, and decorative stitching to reveal the colorful fabric beneath your solid top layer.

Peggy will guide you through proper hand and body positioning, working with acrylic quilting rulers or free-motion techniques, and safely trimming the stitched design with curve-tipped embroidery scissors. You will also learn how thoughtful fabric selection can make your reverse-appliqué design stand out.

This project is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen your quilting skills while creating a striking piece that can be finished as a small quilt, wall hanging, or decorative accent.

Skill level: Confident beginner or intermediate sewing skills. Students should be able to use acrylic quilting rulers or have free-motion quilting skills.

Techniques you will learn
  • Taking a design from simple to more complex
  • Proper hand and body positioning for success
  • Using curve-tipped embroidery scissors
Machine, tools and notions
  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • Machine manual, power cord, foot pedal, and extension table
  • Standard sewing supplies
  • Polyester 40–50 weight thread to match the solid fabric; Glide works well
  • 90/14 topstitching needles
  • Sew Steady Template Sampler Set
  • Quilt-marking chalk or pen
  • Snip-Eze embroidery scissors or small curve-tip scissors
Fabric and project supplies
  • One 12-inch square of double-sided, paper-backed adhesive, such as Pellon Wonder-Under or HeatnBond
  • One 19-inch square of bright multicolor print fabric
  • Four 4-inch × 21-inch strips of the bright multicolor print for borders
  • One 12½-inch square of solid fabric that contrasts or coordinates with the multicolor print
  • One 22-inch square of 80/20 or cotton batting
  • One 25-inch square of fabric for backing
The bright multicolor print will peek through the solid fabric, so choose fabrics with plenty of contrast for the strongest reverse-appliqué effect.

Looking forward to seeing what you create! See you soon!
